TRAGEDY AS MAN DIES AFTER BEING PULLED UNRESPONSIVE FROM THE WATER

A swimmer has died at a popular beach despite paramedics and other beachgoers trying to resuscitate him.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was pronounced dead after he was pulled from the water at Cosy Corner beach in Torquay along Victoria's Surf Coast at 9:45am on Saturday.

Three ambulance units were called to the beach after members of the public went into the water to retrieve the man.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, Victoria Police said.

CPR was performed for an extended period of time, according to a police statement.

'Members of the public performed CPR on the man, but it was unsuccessful,' the statement read.

The beach sits in a sheltered spot that is popular with families though other swimmers reported the waves being rough on the day due to south-easterly winds.

Authorities said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
