Earthquakes, landslides see Guatemalan school closures

This July 9, Guatemalan authorities have closed schools and suspended non-essential services in and near the capital following earthquakes that took place on July 8. The first 5.7-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks eventually led to landslides that killed at least two residents and caused buildings to collapse. Landslides often occur in areas that are considered geologically vulnerable. Steep slopes and heavy rain are two major contributing factors to landslides, but there are other factors at play. From rock types to seismic activity, there are geological complexities that may increase the probability of a landslide occurring, but new research also points to human activity and climate as contributing variables. In this gallery, we highlight some of history's most shocking landslides. Curious to know more about them? Click on to find out.

Ukrainian anarchists: 100 years of resistance

The February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine marked the resurgence of the Russo-Ukrainian war, transforming speculation into a harsh reality. Among the global volunteers, Ukrainian anarchists stand out as a fascinating and unconventional force. Emerging from the democratic traditions of the Zaporozhian Cossacks and later shaped by figures like Nestor Makhno, Ukrainian anarchism has long been associated with resistance, egalitarianism, and anti-authoritarian ideals.
