BABY GIRL IS THROWN OUT OF THIRD-FLOOR WINDOW IN A CAT BOX

  • Incident happened in the Altglienicke district of Berlin around 1pm on Monday

A baby girl has been thrown out of a third-floor window in a cat box and broke both her arms and legs in the fall but miraculously survived.

Police were alerted to the incident at an apartment building in the Altglienicke district of Berlin around 1pm on Monday.

A passerby reported hearing crying and whimpering coming from a cat box lying under a balcony and found the seriously injured girl inside, local media reports.

Emergency services took the 21-month-old baby to the nearby hospital, where X-rays showed that both her arms and legs were broken following the 36ft-fall.

While she remains in the intensive care unit, her condition is said to be no longer life-threatening.

Pictures from the scene show the cat carrier lying between a bicycle stand and an overturned garbage bags, which witnesses say were thrown out of a third-floor window alongside a phone and bottles prior to the girl being found.

The area where the animal transport box was found was cordoned off on Monday afternoon as investigators secured evidence.

Police have launched an attempted murder investigation and arrested the baby girl's mother, who they found in the flat on the third floor alongside another child.

The second child, reportedly a boy, was taken into care by the local youth welfare office.

It is unclear whether the mother locked her daughter in the cat box and threw her out of the window. The father's whereabouts are not currently known.

Investigators did not publish any information on the mother's age or her social background.

Berlin police spokeswoman Anja Dierschke confirmed that the 3rd Homicide Squad has taken over the investigation into the case.

Prosecutors are expected to decide on Tuesday whether the mother will have to appear in front of a judge.
