UK ENVOY APPOINTED PATRON OF CMI MALAYSIA’S REGIONAL BOARD

PETALING JAYA: A renowned chartered professional body for management and leadership based in the UK has appointed the country’s high commissioner to Malaysia as patron of its local board.

On Wednesday, The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) announced the appointment of Ailsa Terry as patron of its regional board.

“We are honoured to announce that Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG, UK High Commissioner to Malaysia, has accepted an invitation to serve as patron for CMI Malaysia’s regional board,” CMI Asia-Pacific said in a post on LinkedIn.

Terry succeeded Charles Hay as her country’s envoy in August last year.

CMI also announced the appointment of former Universiti Utara Malaysia vice-chancellor, Mustafa Ishak, as chair of the regional board, replacing Prebagaran Jayaraman, who held the post for nine months.

Mustafa is also the deputy chair of the National Professors Council.

CMI has come under scrutiny recently over allegations it has been issuing unaccredited certificates.

Last month, FMT reported that members of CMI’s regional board were questioned in April this year over the matter. CMI said it had on May 2 issued a comprehensive written explanation to the higher education ministry.

In a court filing, CMI said it relies on its partners’ own programme assessment methodology to assess the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners. As such, no separate assessment is necessary for its accreditation, it said.

CMI also said its certificates do not require recognition by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) because it is itself a regulated awarding body which accredits degree courses already accredited by the MQA.
