STEVEN THIRU ELECTED COMMONWEALTH LAW ASSOCIATION HEAD

PETALING JAYA: Prominent lawyer Steven Thiru has been elected as the Commonwealth Law Association (CLA) president for the 2025-2027 term, beginning Feb 1.

Thiru, a former Malaysian Bar president, had been serving as a CLA exco member since 2019 before being elected to this post.

The senior lawyer is the second Malaysian to helm the CLA after another former Bar Council chief, Cyrus Das, who was the president from 1999 to 2003.

In his message to mark his election, Thiru said the CLA would promote the administration of justice throughout the Commonwealth with its overarching mission to uphold and champion the rule of law, human rights, access to justice and constitutionalism.

“In this regard, we are, and will continue to be, resilient against all manner of threats of absolutism, abuse of power and, critically, the tyranny of the rule by law in the guise of the rule of law,” he said.

Thiru, who is the managing partner of Messrs Steven Thiru in Kuala Lumpur, has been a practising lawyer for 32 years, serving 10 years on the Bar.

He is currently one of the vice-presidents of the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific.

Thiru read law at the University of Leicester and was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales at Middle Temple. He was then admitted to the Malaysian Bar.

He also holds a master of laws degree from Universiti Malaya.
