MORE RACIAL INTERACTION NEEDED TO STAMP OUT EXTREMIST VIEWS, SAYS UMNO VP

JOHOR BARU: More interaction among the races is needed to weed out extremism in the country, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

He said Malaysia is a multi-racial country and there should be more efforts to ensure the people reject extremism and avoid provoking racial sentiments.

"These are things that are not beneficial to anyone," he said, adding that more racial interaction was a way forward to combat this.

He was speaking to reporters after attending a Hari Raya gathering organised by the Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) and Barisan Nasional veterans here.

Mohammed Khaled said that based on the outcome of past general elections, there is no party that could govern the country alone.

"You can go solo in elections but you will need a coalition to form the government," he said.

He also said that Umno would need to work on strategies to attract more new and young voters.

"In Pasir Gudang, we have about 20,000 Umno members and about 200,000 voters. With new voters, the figure will go up to 250,000 but the number of Umno members remain the same," he said.
