LAWYERS, ACTIVIST CALL FOR FIRDAUS TO BE INVESTIGATED, ARRESTED

KUALA LUMPUR: Two lawyers and an activist have called for preacher Firdaus Wong to be investigated for various offences after a video featuring him dispensing advice on converting minors went viral.

They are also calling for police reports to be lodged against Firdaus as well as for his arrest.

Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said Firdaus should be investigated for wounding religious feelings, and called on affected parents to lodge police reports.

Rajesh said that from a legal perspective, Firdaus had “somewhat confessed” to converting minors when he claimed he was used to handling such cases.

“That’s a confession he has done it (converting minors) before. You don’t go around converting other people’s children,” he told a press conference.

Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal, also a lawyer, questioned the government’s perceived silence over the matter, and said it reeked of double standards.

“The Madani government has always warned about touching on topics revolving around the 3Rs,” he said, referring to issues related to race, religion and royalty.

“But it has yet to make any statement on the matter.”

S Shashi Kumar, president of the Global Human Rights Federation, questioned the government’s lack of response.

“It has been 11 days since the issue (was first highlighted) and (there have been) numerous press statements. Yet, till today, the education ministry, the police, and the Attorney-General’s Chambers have not stepped in,” he said.
