PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Academic Movement (Gerak) today hit out at the authorities for summoning three university students and an academic for speaking up against a professor accused of sharing nude pictures of himself.
In a statement, Gerak described the move as uncalled for.
“Why are the authorities these days increasingly and deliberately barking up the wrong tree, intimidating and punishing good Malaysians, often victims, and letting the real offenders off the hook so easily?” it said.
On Tuesday, it was reported that police had summoned the four, who spoke at a recent press conference on the now-suspended professor from Universiti Malaya, for allegedly violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
One of the four gave a statement last week while the remaining three, who include UM Feminism Club president Chin Jes Weng, are scheduled to be questioned on Saturday morning.
The others who spoke were UM gender studies master’s graduate spokesman S Indramalar, Wong Xiao You of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, and UM Academic Staff Association exco Aznijar Yazid.
