COPS REFUTE CELEBRITY’S ALLEGATIONS FOR LACK OF INVESTIGATION INTO CHEATING CASE

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have refuted an allegation by a celebrity over the lack of an investigation following 14 police reports lodged for cheating and embezzlement.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf (pic) said his department detected a TikTok video uploaded by user@BettyBanafee.

"The video alleged that the CCID has failed to investigate 14 police reports lodged since two years ago," he said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 8).

Checks revealed that the 14 reports were lodged by Shakib Abu Bakar Banafee, believed to be the TikTok user's younger brother and four others, he said.

"All the reports were properly investigated and two investigation papers were opened under Section 409 and Section 420 of the Penal Code.

"The investigation under Section 409 of the Penal Code was completed and the Attorney-General's Chambers decided to classify the case as No Further Action (NFA).

"This is because of insufficient statements to indicate elements of criminal breach of trust," he said.

Comm Ramli said however the case was referred back and reviewed by the Solicitor-General last month and the NFA decision remained.

"The investigating officer had also informed the complainants of the decision," he added.

Meanwhile, the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code is still ongoing, Comm Ramli said.

"We assure all parties that the investigation is being conducted fairly and transparently to ensure that justice is done," he said.

He stressed again that all police reports lodged will be investigated properly based on the existing laws.

"The investigation encompasses statements and evidence from relevant parties, including the complainant and suspect.

"It is not wise to accuse the police negatively just because the outcome of an investigation does not favour the complainant," he said.

Comm Ramli said TikTok user @BettyBanafee's allegation that the police did not have a standard operating procedure (SOP) in carrying out an investigation, was unwarranted.

"We refute such an allegation as it is an irresponsible thing to do," he said
