RTS LINK NOW 77.6% COMPLETE; SYSTEM INSTALLATION TO BEGIN BY END-2024

KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Construction progress of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project between Johor Bahru and Singapore has reached 77.61% as of May 31, according to Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp).

If all areas progress as planned, RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), the operator of the RTS Link project, will carry out system installation works by the end of this year.

In a statement on Tuesday, MRT Corp reported that the maintenance depot in Wadi Hana, Johor Bahru — a main railway infrastructure component — has achieved a progress rate of 82.14%, with track level, architectural, mechanical, and electrical works, as well as external tasks, advancing satisfactorily.

Regarding the Bukit Chagar Station, one of the two stations of the RTS Link, progress is currently at 71.16%, with u-shell beams above the KTMB tracks now completed.

The current focus is on the construction of the station floors, MRT Corp said, adding that the platform for the Bukit Chagar Station is expected to be ready for system access by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, MRT Corp reported that progress for the pier column work is at 65%, with all pier columns along Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and Jalan Ismail Sultan installed and over half of the guideway spans connecting them completed.

For the marine section, all marine pier columns are erected, and installation works for guideway spans are ongoing, with the overall construction progress at 74.76%. The marine section includes a navigation channel measuring 75m wide and 25m high to facilitate boat and barge passage, with completion expected by November 2024.

The RTS Link, a 4km light rail transit shuttle service between Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North Station in Singapore, was first proposed in 2010 with an initial completion target of 2018, which was later postponed to the end of 2024.

With a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction, it is anticipated to ease congestion at the Johor-Malaysia Causeway, currently the world’s busiest border crossing.

Infrastructure works for the Malaysian segment, encompassing station and depot construction, along with 2.7km of land and marine viaducts, are overseen by MRT Corp subsidiary Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd.
